Although the discourses on international relations have increasingly recognized the importance of moral values and ethical reasoning in international affairs, political realism continues to serve as the dominant paradigm, focusing on the quest for national security and the promotion of economic and social well-being. Meanwhile, the impacts of the globalization process intertwined with the international movement for democracy and human rights on international law and the discourse of sovereignty, self-determination and sustainable development have made the necessity for moral assessment more visible. This course explores two distinct dimensions of international political morality: the role of moral values in foreign policy and the ethical foundation of the rules and structures of global society. It addresses both philosophical and practical questions pertaining to the study of ethics in international politics.
